Christmas toffee

When i was a teenager, i worked at a little country resturant called Stoggy Hollow ( in Woodstock CT). i spent a good 8 years waitressing, baking and cooking there. In those 8 years i made some life long friends. My former boss, Carol, is still one of those dear friends. Every year around Christmas, Carol would make tons of this toffee and package it up in attractive tins to sell. Every year i got yelled at for eatting what i was suppose to be packaging. Finally, a few years before the business sold, Carol gave me the recipe. Now i make this toffee every year, and think of her every time.
Christmas Toffee
2 sticks butter
1 cp sugar
1 tbsp light corn syrup
1 tbsp water
1 large bag sliced almonds
1 large Hershey chocolate bar, shredded
Mix first four ingredients over medium heat. stir occasionally. Using a candy thermometer, stirring occasionally, wait for the temp to be just under 300 degrees. This is just below the hard crack level.
while the toffee is cooking, butter a cookie sheet and top with almonds then chocolate. When toffee is done, pour over the almonds and chocolate. Immediatly cover the bare side of toffee with chocolate then almonds. Allow to refridgerate for atleast an hour before cracking into pieces.

Gingerbread cookies

Christmas traditions start with gingerbread cookies. My gingerbread cookie recipe is borrowed from my friend Dawn, who makes the most amazing gingerbread you will eat. Every year she would bake some and bring them into work for us to enjoy. Thankyou Dawn, for giving me a new tradition to share with my kids.
Gingerbread Cookies
3 cps flour
3/4 cp dark brown sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tbsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
12 tbsp softened butter
3/4 cp molasses
2 tbsp buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla extract
combine all dry ingredients in a medium bowl. in your mixer combine butter and sugar til fluffy. add egg and vanilla and mix. add buttermilk and mix well. alternatly add dry mix and molasses. mix til soft dough forms. make two balls out of the dough, wrap in plastic wrap and refridgerate for atleast 4 hours. roll out til 1/4 inch thickness. bake at 350 for 9 mins

Healthy eats basket

Theres a really great cafe that opened in the center of my little town in Eastford CT. The owners of Corriander, were nice enough to allow me to sell a few of my crochet foods. So i went down with an arm full of doughnuts, cupcakes, and a few dolls. But then i got home and thought, maybe i should create something extra special to display there. So over the past two weeks, in between customs, i created a few new items and threw them all in a very cool basket.
I have featured my carrots, eggplant, and strawberries in my farmers market sets. With this basket i wanted to add a few new items, so i came up with a pear, apple, and a couple large portabella style mushrooms. In my Farmers Market set, theres a half dozen of white eggs, which i didnt want in this set. So i took out them and added the other new items in place of them. All displayed in a cotten crochet basket.
Im really excited about this set, and i think Corrianders people will think its something unique as well.

A rainbow of colors!

With the seasons changing, i have found inspiration everywhere! The leaves on the trees are a brilliant display of a whole rainbow of colors. Its the perfect time of year for a nice walk, and pumpkin picking!
With the rainbow inspiration, i have decided to stock my personal cart with colorful items. With the holiday shopping season lurking, i know some moms are already thinking ahead. So, to make it easy for them, i am going to do a nice big stocking of my finest goodies and some new items.
Pictured here is a small tease of what i will be stocking on November 18th. These are my magic mushrooms in rainbow. The mushrooms are perfect for play kitchens or pretend play. My children love them for throwing at each other, lol..
To see when im stocking, and where in November, please visit Jodys Designs facebook page. Look under notes for the whole list.

baby shower gift

My brother, Bob, is expecting his first child next month. They are not finding out the childs sex, wanting the big surprise. So i had to make something gender neutral for the baby shower this sunday. I had some gorgeous japanese sheep knit, that i have been saving for something special. Whats more special then a newborn baby? So i sewed up this adorable set, and had my friend Dena ( lulu Bird Designs) applique a sheep on a onesie, just to add that little something extra to the gift. Im super excited about how this set turned out, its too adorable for words.

Wonderland Congo

I am joining the ladies of Wonderland Congo for the holiday seasonl. this is a special congo that is only open for about 4 months, til the end of the holiday shopping season. There is a big variety of vendors, all exceptional in their own way. I am thrilled to be a part of it. Grand Opening is September 15th at noon.

I am starting to preview a few dolls for the Grand Opening. I have my favorite doll, Zoe, who has a special dress dyed by Indigo Onion ( who, if you havent figured it out, i worship). Im also featuring a new doll, Penny. Penny is perfectly purple! My daughter is obsessed with this doll, its calling to her. Pennys skirt is patchwork with two kinds of batiks. Im a huge batik nut, so this doll is very exciting for me. Her hair is vibrant purples and pinks, which Johanna is drawn to. I have to say, Penny is second in line with Zoe on my favorites list!

Rainbow swirls!

If you ever need anything dyed, Pam of Indigo Onion is your lady. I had Pam dye up some hemp fleece that i had just laying around. She dyed it in her famous "carnivale" colorway, which is my absolute favorite. Every color of the rainbow, showing in their intense vibrancy, in a marble swirl dye technique. Pam makes this look easy, but im sure it cant be!
Anyway, so i finally sewed up the fabric. I had just enough to make my daughter this hoodie. I am trying to make all of her back to school clothes this year, and felt this would be an awesome addition. Thanks to Pam, my daughter will be the most colorful child in Preschool!
please check Indigo Onion on,

Release your inner rockstar!

Mainstreet is going with a Rockstar theme this month! This just happens to be one of my favorite themes to work with. So far im previewing an amazing 3T set, featuring a skirt and top. The set is glamed out with pinks and blacks, rocking the guitars and skulls as well.
Another item i have previewing is the awesome purse you see in the picture. Made from a very hard to find Micheal Miller, Groovy Guitars fabric. Lining is the coordinating Hoopla fabric, also by Micheal Miller. This purse has a magnetic closure and a inner pocket. By far, my favorite purse yet.
I have a few more items left to finnish and stock, so make sure you check out the stocking om August 17th at 12:30!

some fun sewing this month! ive been making these elephants for fun, for my kids, and decided to list a few on Mainstreet. the first two i listed sold within an hour, so i decided to make up a few more. They will not be a regular item, i just like to sew them for fun. Im enlarging the pattern as well, to make them more hugable for kids. They will make great gifts for my niece and upcoming niece or nephew. I love how the heather Ross goldfish fabric looked on this one :)

a few weeks ago i noticed some unusal grunting coming from the bunny hutch. My husband went out to check that night, and noticed two little baby bunnies had been born. The babies were about 3 inches long, huddled together in their nest.

So far, Momma bunny ( Nibbles) has done a great job taking care of her babies. We removed the daddy ( scrapper), to his own little hut. My daughter likes to say that Scrapper needed a time out!lol. today we noticed the babies are moving onto real food, nolonger their mothers milk. in a few weeks they have grown so much! my son has named one of them Mumu. we can only keep one, because we think they are male and female, and we cant have them breeding. So we will be finding the male a new home soon! The kids are having a blast with them though, and really enjoy watching them grow. Its such a mircle on our little 1/2 acre farm!

johannas 3rd bday

today is my daughters 3rd bday! She told me she wanted a Hello Kitty party this year, so thats what she got. I made my first rainbow cake, in a square sheet pan. that was a trip! very time consuming thing, since you have to dye several bowls of cake batter, then layer them in the pan. Luckily it came out gorgeous! I used a shaped cake pan for the Hello Kitty face, which wasnt easy either. But the finnished cake looked fun. Johanna really liked it.

Everyone bought her Hello Kitty items or Barbie items. I dont think there wasnt a gift that wasnt pink!lol. But she had a great time, and so did everyone else.

Sunday, June 6, 2010

part of a custom im doing for a very patient momma. She wanted a normal sized doll, for her eldest daughter, and a baby sized doll for her youngest. I have not made a "baby" type doll yet, so i had to create a new pattern. This doll has a cloth diaper, swaddeling blanket and a cap. I have never sewn a diaper before, so that was something new as well!lol, but im glad with the outcome. shes a very sweet little doll. I did her eyes sleeping, to be a little less scary for the little girl. she about 9 inches long, with a little plump belly. Overall, i really like how she turned out and i think ill make more in the future.

Skirt set previews are up! i have 3 sets stocking June 3rd, at Mainstreet congo. i have a 2T,3T, and a 4T set. I also got my friend, Dena of Lulubird Designs, in on the stocking. she did a shirt to match one of my skirts. Please check the sets out! Remember, if a set is too big for your little one now, you can buy it and put it away for them to grow into. I cant guarantee that i will make these same sets again, so you have to get them when i stock them!

Theres more collabs, some Auctions and drawings as well. So far everything is going smoothly, except for the butterflies in my tummy! You would think, having been a wahm for over 2 yrs now, that i would be used to stockings and the hype. But this is my first adventure out on my own, with out the support of a congo. I know ill have friends there to support me, but its the fresh faces im nervous about! I try to be original and new, and i hope everyone gets to see that. I pray that this gets me the exposure ive been craving, and maybe some new opportunities!! Anyway, wish me luck!

happy Earth Day!

How did you celebrate Earth day? id like to think everyone went out and planted a tree, or played in their garden.. but i know thats not always possible. Going green is an everyday thing, though. there are many ways to help our planet, and support our stay at home moms, by changing things in your daily life. heres a few i can think of off hand:
Switch to Unpaper! My family made the switch a few months ago. I decided to cut up my husbands old Tshirts and serge two layers together to make decent sized towels for cleanups. I use these towels in the kitchen, for everything, and i keep some in the bathroom for clean ups in there as well. By doing this i have saved money, saved waste in our landfills, and maybe a tree or two.
Switch to cloth pads! I have not made this switch yet, but its spreading like wildfire amoung many of my peers. There are many wahms out there now that sew cloth menstral pads out of natural fibers that are gorgeous! Ive seen pads made into works of art using designer fabrics, and soft fabrics. a few whams i would recommend are
www.hyenacart.com/mothermoonpads
www.hyenacart.com/pinklemonade
Switch to cloth lunch baggies! Your childs lunch can be fun and fashionable, as well as cutting back on the amount of plastic we put into our landfills. Sandwich sized baggies are sewn from designer fabrics, and are reusable everyday! you can get them made in prints that your child will love, and theyre not that expensive! a few whams i would recommend are
www.hyenacart.com/mybeautifulgirl
www.hyenacart.com/joyfulearth
Use cloth diapers & wipes! Obviously im a huge advocate on cloth diapers. i made the switch with my daughter and never turned back. this alone has saved me hundreds of dollars. If you choose to line dry the diapers, thats even better! you save energy costs! No more spending $40 for a box of diapers that lasts 2 or 3 months. Starting up with cloth does cost money, but you can turn around and resell the diapers later, getting back about half of what you paid. You can also use cloth wipes, which are easy to make yourself ( same as my unpaper towels). Options for cloth diapering are endless, but heres a few of my favs
www.hyenacart.com/heartlanddreams
www.hyenacart.com/piddlepoddles

These are just a few things i can think of off hand. As always i try to support handmade, and my fellow stay at home moms. But our planet comes first! changing just the little things makes a difference. take shorter showers, car pool, use greener cleaning products.. im sure youve heard them all. So why not try going green, and supporting handmade at the same time?

Pin Wheel treats

last week i made an amazing blueberry pie. When i do a blueberry pie, i do the top crust in a lattice/basket weave type layer. so there tends to be left over pie dough. what do you do with the left over? well, i make pinwheels. my husband has a huge weakness for these little cinnamon goodies, and my kids cant stop eatting them. they may not come out perfectly shaped every time, but they taste awesome!
Pin wheel treats
Ingredient:
left over pie dough
butter
cinn/sugar mix
roll out your pie dough til its almost the same thickness as you would do for making an actual pie. you will want to do this in small portions so it doesnt take over your whole counter. smother the dough with melted butter, then pour on cinn/sugar mix. dont sprinkle the mix, you actually want to pour it on and cover every exposed area with it. roll dough, with fingers, to form a long tube. cut off the ends and place on cookie sheet, continue to cut off spirals. about 1/2 inch thick. baste tops of spirals with melted butter, and a dusting of cinn/sugar. cook at 425 degrees for about 10 mins, or until golden brown.
be warned, these pinwheels might unform, and extra sugar might candy up. but it doesnt affect the taste of them at all!! enjoy!

Sweetpea boutique collab

The first of several collabs for my grandopening, is complete! This collab was done with Maggie, of Sweetpea Boutique. Maggie embellished a 3T tshirt with felt. The colors of the leaves of the tree, match the colors in the skirt perfectly! I crocheted a ruffled bottom skirt, made for a child that is already potty trained. the skirt has an elastic waist line so that the toddler can easily pull up to put on and easy to take off, if they dress themselves, or for the quick potty visit. The yarn is dyed by Anticipation. this set is made for a 2T/3T child.

Dandelion Dreams

My favorite part of spring is when my bulbs start to bloom. the 90 degree weather we had this week, pushed my daffodils right up and open! I have about 8 different breeds of daffodils, spread around my yard. It is by far one of my favorite flowers, because its the first to greet us in the spring. Daffodils bring sunshine and hope, after the cold and long winters we have in NE.
other plants and bushes are already blossoming. my forsithia is already in bloom, creating a vibrant yellow hedge in my front yard. Ive spotted a few Magnolias and weeping cherry trees blooming, as well as some rhodadendons. Next will be the tulips! I have about a dozen different colors and breeds of that bulb as well. Ive noticed my monster bee balm survived. lastyear i pulled a mess of it out and transplanted throughout my yard. this particular bee balm gets to be about 3 feet or more in height. it blooms gigantic red explosions, that can be seen in my neighbors yard!lol! i think im going to experiment more with bee balm, and venture into the different pinks they come in as well.
Bleeding hearts also have a small place in my heart. i have one plant in particular, that was originally planted by my grandfather at his cabin in Coventry. alot of good memories at that place, and the bleeding heart plant was something that always called to me in his garden. My mother took a piece, years before he passed, and planted it at the house i grew up in. When my parents split, and they sold the house, my mother then gave me that particular plant. The little snippet she had taken a long time ago, birthed a 2 foot wide beauty. Now i have the gigantic reminder of my youth with my grandfather, running through his gardens chasing bubbles and dandelions..

Spring is coming!

A sign that spring is coming to CT! i planted these seeds last week, when the weather was in the high 50s. Now the seeds are about 4 inches tall! so far i have squash and green beans that i have put into bigger pots. i started them off in a pete kit that comes with the base, lid, and 74 pete rounds. Within days i had green poking out the top, and as of a few days ago, i woke up to the plants pushing the lid off the "greenhouse". So as you can imagine, i am thrilled that we will get things moving early this year! Last year it took a full 3 weeks to see this progress, and we didnt get to really enjoy the veggies til July. Hopefully this year we will be feasting earlier.
My daffodils are poking through around the yard as well. The ones closest to the house, actually have small buds on them. We have a week of rain and wet weather coming, so i hope that helps liven them up a bit.

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

well i havent blogged in a while, cause ive been busy getting ready for the Easter shopping and customs to begin. I have a few early items listing on MAinstreet tomarrow, the 17th. a few bunnies and some eggs to start. :)
Im in the process of opening my own HC! its about time, i know..lol I got used to the comfort of being on congos. the family atmosphere really helps you get into a niche and not want out! But i want to get bigger and better, and the way to do that is to go out on my own... leave the nest..lol.. so i have my graphics being designed as we speak. Nancy, of Calico Rose, is working on something fantastic! Shes really captured the look i want for the new store, and is doing banners etc, to match.. so keep an eye open for the grand opening stocking of that. i will announce it here and on facebook, and probebly anywhere else i can think of!

ive been doing a little sewing as well. I made a few peasant tops and listed them on A la Mode congo, they sold out. so im listing more this week, on the 18th! i love making them, and its a great way to use up some fabric.

so much to do!
